A Father’s Day Appreciation

Posted on Posted in Poetry

Here’s to the fathers who were not enough, to the ones who were never there, to the ones who got it “wrong.”

Here’s to the fathers that no one talks about, to the ones that we wished we’d never had

to the ones that hurt us.

You were the perfect fathers.

Not because you did the perfect job,

but because you were the ones we got.

Without you there would be no us.

And you may not have taught us what we wanted to know,

but you showed us something that was just as important.

A suffering that still belongs to us all

and you invited us to heal it.

So here’s to crying in the afternoon sun for the fathers that we have lost, cursed, and wished were different.

Thank you for offering us yet another opportunity to bring light into darkness.
